Casey and I took the train to Werribee Open Range Zoo. Our visit happened to coincide with "Rhythm of Africa", a cultural celebration with music, drums, dancing, and picnics. We didn't stay long enough to check it out but got a great tour of all the animals with a few "meet the keeper" sessions. We took a safari tour on a whacki bus with windows that opened upwards and side panels that opened down with built in steps for loading along the length of the bus. The meerkats, lions, and hippos were among the more entertaining wildlife. We watched the meerkats rapidly dig giant holes while we ate lunch. I'm told there's an entire TV show created around watching meerkats. Really? The lions were fed giant slabs of raw meat, with two lions devouring the three slabs, leaving one to hunger until the next day. One of the hippos charged into the water while we listened to the zoo keeper tell us three times that we picked the most perfect day to come to the zoo. The weather really was spectacular.
