We woke up to a blistery winter morning with fresh fallen snow and icy roads! It was beautiful until we realized we had a 5 hour drive ahead of us in less than ideal road conditions.
The roads were slippery and many of the winding roads were on cliff edges with no guard rail. Scary!! We kept passing semi's that were pulled off the road and not allowed to travel in these conditions.
But oh so pretty!! Slowly and carefully we made our way over the hills and through the mountains to Dunedin we would go!
We arrived to a town that was all but shut down by the snow and bad weather. School closures, road closures, and sadly factory closures including Cadbury, where we were planning to tour the plant.
We gave ourselves a makeshift tour of the accessible front museum area of Cadbury and bought enough samples from the discount store to make it worth our while.
Mix, Katie, mix!
Our next excursion was another bust! We drove out to Otago Peninsula to the Penguin Place and Albatross Center but arrived 20 minutes after the last tour began and everything was already closed up. We didn't get to see the penguins, but we did get up close and personal with the roadside sheep.
The tip of Otago Peninsula at dusk.
me and Katie at Otago Peninsula. I made Katie get out of the car to take this picture. She thought the sheep were out to get her until I reminded her they were running away from her.
