Moeraki Boulders

I'm sure you would never guess it from the photo, but before leaving Dunedin, we went to Baldwin St, the steepest street in the world.

We drove up and down it. It felt steeper than it looks in these pictures, especially going down.

Then we waited...and waited...and waited for the Little Rock Shop to open. It was a jewelery shop Katie spotted the night before and wanted to check out. We got hot cocoa and warmed up in the Ra Cafe Bar next door where the owner/hostess invited us inside before they even opened. Good thing we waited because Katie and I each bought a few pieces which saved Dunedin from being a complete bust. I'm pretty sure we also made the store owner's day who was very proud of his designs.

Then we made a spontaneous stop at the Moeraki Boulders on the eastern shore of the south island.

The Moeraki Boulders.

We climbed onto the boulders while the tide was out.

Katie even climbed inside the boulder, but of course, could not avoid getting her feet wet.

We made a second attempt to see the penguins at Oamaru Blue Penguin Colony, but they were only viewable through a small tunnel into an underground box, so we concluded it was a no go.

Here's a picture of a picture of what we missed. Do you see a trend developing?

We took photos with the penguin statue and had lunch in Oamaru before continuing the drive to Christchurch.

Dad took this photo from the plane on his return flight to Christchurch, pretty impressive!

We had wine and cheese in Mom and Dad's room before our last supper together in New Zealand.
